Mola
most often refers to the hand-stitched panels done by the Kuna (sometimes spelled Cuna) women of Panama.
Mola motives have their origin in body painting and are still used by many indigenous groups of Latin America.
The rich wild life of San Blas has been a major source of artistic expression of the Kuna for centuries. Exotic birds from their jungle, insects, fish and other marine life are all popular themes for mola artists.  These two panels depict birds or ducks with a bird inside of each one.
A main concept in the design of Molas is to leave as little unworked space as possible as the Kunas believe that evil spirits can settle in the free spaces.
Molas are often sold in pairs, the pair consisting of the back and front panels of a blouse. The two molas are usually two variations on a theme. Matched molas complement each other and should be displayed or used together for the greatest impact.
Mola panels have many uses. They can be framed as art or made into pillows, place mats or wall hangings as they are Molas are very sturdy and well sewn.
The measurements are 17 X 14 inches:  They are in very good conditon and the edges are slightly uneven as shown.
