MOLA PANAMA LOBSTER Lg 9.5x6.5" SEVEN Color Cuna/Kuna Shirt Panel HandSewn s&h
This has never been used on a shirt but handled (how could you not pick it UP? I did!!) Even the Cuna had to pack and unpack them when they brought them into Panama City from the San Blas Islands. This one is a LOBSTER walking around with multi-color wings. Three cloth base with FOUR small patches for the line stripes. It measures 9.5"" by 6.5". The word MOLA means SHIRT in the Cuna language. These were "shirt panels" made as the front part of a shirt with the rest of the cloth being decorated to match. I show the back because one should always check the stitching to see if it is handmade. They have had for years factories, in Panama City which use sewing machines. Which would you prefer?? Handmade is culturally made!
I spent a tour in the military in the mid to late 1960's in the Canal Zone and then went back about 9 years later for another year and a half to see a few more of the wonders of this beautiful country. In our barracks we had Cuna as houseboys and they worked the kitchen. I was a linguist so had the honor of being the liaison with them for some other projects like painting the barracks. They are such down to Earth people!!! I was so curious that every other question in our
negotiations
was about their culture and they were happy to share it. Highest incidence of albinos in the world. I don't know if it is in their language but Panama means Land of Many Fish. OK, back to the Mola!
I show the back because one should check the stitching to see if it is handmade. They have had for years, factories in Panama City which use sewing machines which means "not" handmade. Note the different color threads and the non-machine hand stitches. Which would you prefer???? I bought these personally and kept select ones and sold most while at the Univ. of Miam for a degree in Hispanic-American Studies.
